Tzienna is a Malaysian-Canadian artist who is equal parts classical and contemporary. As a girl who grew up obsessed with classical crossover albums, Chinese choir tapes and burning 2000s pop onto CDs, she now makes music that blends classical with jazz, pop and folk — songs from the heart that invite multicultural and multi-genre collaborations. Her voice is hailed as warm and soulful, tender and powerful in the chest, and ethereal as a birdsong up high.
Tzienna was trained in classical singing, but realised she did not want to sing only Mozart or Handel in her career. She loves it all — the lush expanse of orchestra, the storytelling spectacle of opera and musical theatre, the joy of catchy pop hooks that everyone can sing, and passionately dancing to salsa in a crowded bar. She puts all of these loves into her voice and music, as a 21st century Asian woman in classical music who seeks to connect with audiences in the concert hall and beyond.
